Each year the International Conference on Urban Health (ICUH) brings together researchers, practitioners, students, and other urban actors to exchange knowledge, share case studies and advance global solutions to the world’s pressing Urban Health challenges. Celebrating its 20th year, this year’s ICUH will be held in Marrakesh, Morocco. The theme of the conference is: A Healthier Horizon: Activating Urban Health Strategies for a Climate Resilient Tomorrow.
The intent of this pre-conference intensive course is to create a vehicle for both new and returning ICUH attendees to deepen their understanding of the challenges and the impact of their work through a practical, focused full-day session exploring solutions to some of the most complex issues in urban health and climate change today. Participants will leave with a greater understanding of the key issues at hand and how they might apply what they learn over the course of the conference to their work at home.
The intensive will begin with level setting background information and key terms in urban health, intended to ensure that all participants, regardless of their background and areas of expertise, begin from a common understanding. Participants will then get a deep dive into each of the 6 conference themes from leading experts in each subject area. After a review of the key principles of a Health Equity in All Policies approach, participants will have the opportunity to experience a healthy, local networking lunch catered by Amal, a women’s economic empowerment nonprofit charity offering a powerful training program for women who want to become chefs to enter the workforce and participate in paid work, chipping away at the fact that women only make up 25% of the Moroccan workforce, and that despite enormous strides, women’s labor is still largely unpaid and undervalued.
The afternoon will bring global experts in Monitoring & Evaluation, Assessment & Capacity Building to lead interactive sessions for participants to gain critical skills as multidisciplinary practitioners. Finally, the day will end with a workshop bringing participants out of the classroom and into the city of Marrakesh to apply what they have learned to measure air quality. Participants walk away equipped with the new vocabulary, skills, and budding partnerships to make an impact and take action to improve health within their communities and disciplines.
